Bike Safety Blog post T4 2018

Bike Safety Blog Post T4 2018
What are the three things that Constable Ken Taught us about where we can ride our bikes? (think - place and time)

1. We learnt that we must only bike on the road and not the footpath. We can't bike on the footpath because they're designed for feet and scooters, not bikes.

2. You can also ride on the grass. When you ride on the grass you need to make sure your gear is the one that is easiest for you to get over the grass.

3. Cycle ways is another good place to ride your bike. A cycle way is a great place because you share the path with walkers and other cyclists and its safe and clear of the road.

Name three important things Constable Ken taught us about how to ride our bikes? (think - eyes and head)

  1. Scan your surroundings. If you don't scan you surroundings you could easily bike into a car.

  1. Look back over your right shoulder. If you don't look back then you could get hit by traffic.

3. Plant your left foot on the ground and your right foot on the pedal. If you don"t do this step then
your bike can wobble and fall and so would you.

Describe the three bike signals that Constable Ken taught us.

  1. Hold your arm out for 3 seconds to the right so the car behind you knows you're turning right.
If they don't know then they could potentially hit you
  1. If you're stopping hold your hand up. If you don't signal that you're stopping a car that's behind
you won't know that so they will just keep going and then you will collide with the car
  1. Hold your arm out for 3 seconds to the left so the car behind you knows you're turning left.
If they don't know then they could potentially hit you

What did you enjoy the most about your Cycle Safe lesson? Why?
I enjoyed biking a loop of the reserve because it was a good exercise. I also really enjoyed it because I pushed myself as I don't ride my bike a lot and I have never really ridden it on grass.

  1. You were able to identify safe places to ride your bike. You have demonstrated you know how to ride safely. The signals you used were appropriate. Keep checking to make sure your helmet is fitted correctly using the three finger rule.
